Chapter 22

Locke

With Tiny Tim settled down and napping on his bed, Locke quietly moved out of the room and gently shut the door behind him.

He thought for a moment about setting the locks but decided it obviously didn’t matter if any of the more powerful wizards wanted inside.

Turning his head down the empty hallway, Locke felt a sense of unease at being the only person on the floor.

Where every room had once been filled to capacity prior to Hell’s sudden and aggressive recruitment of any elementally attuned humans into the warlock program, now sat a reminder of how few wizards remained.

As Locke thought, his feet worked on autopilot, taking him to the elevator banks down the hall, where his hands pushed the appropriate buttons without having to interact with his brain.

The elevator dinged, and Locke snapped out of his thoughtful trance, retaking control over his body and manually walking the rest of the way to Elder Tafoya’s room.

Stopping just outside her door, Locke inhaled deeply, scratched at a sudden itch on top of his head, and then finally knocked three times. Unlike Gryff, his knock was much more welcoming and friendly.

After twenty or so seconds, Elder Bennah Tafoya, the Brown Cloak, opened the door and peered at Locke. Her expression didn’t give away whether she was expecting him or not, and Locke had to admire her restraint. Maybe it was because of his warlock past that he wanted to make sure everyone knew he was a good guy and was there to help, whereas Elder Tafoya had nothing to prove. Introspection for another time, he thought to himself.

“State your business, Apprentice Locke.”

“Oh, um, am…am-am-am I bothering you?”

“I am late in attending to the prisoner in the holding cell,” she said without even a trace of emotion.

Holding cell, Locke thought to himself. So he’s not in the dungeon.

Elder Tafoya noticed Locke’s changing expression as he pieced together what she had intentionally said, letting one corner of her lips curl up in the beginnings of a smile that only he could see.

“Is, ah, Elder Scymanky around? I have some questions in regard to Faerie and Earth.”

“You’ll find her in the library,” she answered. “Now, if you’ll excuse me.”

Elder Tafoya waited for Locke to move from the doorway, then closed the door behind her before making her way down the hall with deliberate footsteps.

“The library it is, then,” Locke said to himself and turned back toward the elevator bank.
